{Whole} food on my mind…

I can’t hide the fact that health foods have been on my mind lately. Once I learned what the U.S. food industry is actually doing more harm to our health than good, and they know about it, and don’t have any plans to change it… I couldn’t un-learn it. But what does it have to do with yoga? Everything. Every yoga book I’ve ever read includes diet. Yoga teaches us to treat our bodies like a temple, and the food we use to fuel our temple is important. It’s crazy how hard it is to eat simply in our modern culture but I’m determined to do it and the more people that do, the more we are voting for a change. Our government will catch on eventually… but only if we demand it.

I never thought I’d be one of those people who says, “No food with a face.” But I’m headed that way. When I read these facts, I was heart broken…

“Rather than grazing in green pastures, animals on factory farms exist in tight confinement with thousands of other animals. They have little chance to express their natural behaviors.

Pigs on factory farms are confined in small concrete pins, without bedding or soil or hay for rooting. The stress of being deprived of social interaction causes some pigs to bite the tails off of other pigs. Some factory farm operators respond by cutting off their tails.

Chickens stand in cages or indoors in large pens, packed so tightly together that each chicken gets a space about the size of a sheet of paper to itself. The chickens are not given space to graze and peck at food in the barnyard, so they resort to pecking each other. Many factory farmers cut off their beaks, a painful procedure that makes it difficult for chickens to eat.” ~Food, Inc.

Wouldn’t it make sense to just let the pigs, chickens, and cows graze like they were born and bread to do?

How you can make a difference… 

  • Vote with your grocery dollars… Purchase organic and fresh fruits and vegetables at your grocery store. It’s simple supply & demand, if you demand it, they will supply it.
  • Buy local… Sending your dollars to local farmers not only stimulates the economy, but you know it’s fresh when you get to personally meet the person who grew your food.
  • Don’t support the cruelties endured by farm animals…  follow the three R’s: Refine your diet by eliminating the most abusive animal products, Reduce your consumption of animal products, Replace the animal products in your diet with vegetarian options.
  • Vegetarian eating is an effective and positive way to help farm animals… www.HumaneEating.org (The Humane Society of the US) gives great meat-free recipes.
  • Educate yourself… This website, www.FarmAnimalWelfare.org (another Humane Society of the US webpage), is a great source of information on the welfare of the farm animals.
  • Speak out on the U.S. Farm Policy… Get updates from Food & Water Watch on the Farm Bill and other food issues by signing up at http://www.foodandwaterwatch.org/email-sign-up/. You will receive emails about what you can do to protect your access to clean, safe, affordable food and water, and how you can help.

This video of Robyn O’Brien is very inspiring. She talks about the U.S. food policy, gives some mind-boggling statistics, and simply sheds light on the food industry and why it needs to change.
